Day 41: Day in the Life
Ellen Goodman once said, “normal is getting dressed in clothes that you buy for work, driving through traffic in a car that you are still paying for, in order to get to a job that you need so you can pay for the clothes, car and the house that you leave empty all day in order to afford to live in it”.
I work full time as you probably know if you read any of my posts. Which means that close to 40 hours a week are spent in front of a computer and about 15 hours a week are spent inside a car driving to work.
It there are only 168 hours in a week minus about 56 hours for sleep and the work related, I am left with about 57 hours per week, 32 of those are on the weekend when I don’t work, and 5 of those are the average hours I have left on a weekday after work and sleep.
If I fall asleep at 10:30PM and wake up at 6:30AM, get dressed, drive 1.5 hours, get to work for 8:30AM, work 8 hours, and drive 1.5 hours - then I will get home at around 6:00PM.
Between 6:00PM and 10:30PM is the time that I have for myself, 4.5 hours. How crazy is that?
Everyday I wake up and spend 11.5 hours on things related to work so that I can come home and have 4.5 hours of freedom.
What’s the solution here? Shorten the commute? Cut out sleep time? Work for yourself? Where do we go from here?
